Allergies and Intolerances

At our School Council meeting last week we reviewed our Allergies and Canteen policies to ensure that all students with allergies and food intolerances are handled appropriately,

Below is some of the relevant changes to the policies.

Food Intolerances

  • Parents and carers of students with intolerances are to inform the school of their child’s diagnosed intolerance and provide a copy of their ASCIA Action Plan for Allergic Reactions and/or medical letter from their treating doctor, outlining their condition and providing strategies for risk minimisation.

After receiving a copy of the ASCIA Action Plan for Allergic Reactions and/or medical letter from their treating doctor, a meeting will be convened with the student’s parents/carers and a member of the school’s Principal Class to develop an Individual Allergic Reactions Management Plan (please see the school’s Allergy Policy on the school’s website for further information)

Canteen Use

  • Parents and carers of students with allergies and/or food intolerances are strongly encouraged to liaise with canteen personnel about their child’s dietary requirements on a yearly basis
  • When ordering lunches through the canteen, parents and carers of students with allergies and/or food intolerances are encouraged to label their child’s lunch order with a clear indication that their child has an ‘ALLERGY’ and/or ‘INTOLERANCE’
  • Canteen staff will implement a double-checking process for all orders labelled as ‘ALLERGY’ and/or ‘FOOD INTOLERANCE’ to minimise the risk of exposure to allergens

Classroom and specialist teaching staff will distribute all canteen lunches to students each day. As part of this process, they will double check the labelling on student lunch orders that are labelled as ‘ALLERGY’ and/or ‘FOOD INTOLERANCE’ to ensure contents match the order and are also labelled with the ‘ALLERGY’ and/or ‘FOOD INTOLERANCE’, for example, an order requiring gluten free items are labelled as ‘gluten free’

Mrs Chalmers, our Assistant Principal, will be contacting parents of students with allergies and/or intolerances between now and the end of the year to set up a meeting to develop their child’s Individual Allergic Reactions Management Plan.
